This is my first time blogging as a sojourner team member so I'll introduce myself a little. My name is Joshua McCabe and I recently graduated from Utah Valley University. I started running seriously my junior year in high school and have run ever since. I am extremely injury prone (for every one day of health I have had one day of injury), which I feel has given me a good perspective on how I train and compete. I was blessed to have a good career at UVU and I am ready now to be a part of another great team.
UV Half Marathon was my first half marathon. I am a low mileage guy, not because I want to be, but because my body only allows me to run a maximum of 50 miles in a week. I haven't run over 53 miles in a week for about 19 months now, but have come to accept that limitation and make the most of it. So, given that training background I was a little concerned that I'd be able to handle 13.1 at race pace. I felt comfortable cardiovascularly during the whole race, (which I ended up averaging 5:06 mile pace) but my musculoskeletal system was completely destroyed. I wasn't able to walk very well until Tuesday and today was my first "run" (a 3 mile jog at 7:41 pace), which was painful. I expect that by early next week I'll be back to normal.
I made a move around mile 8 to put some distance between myself and Jon, and once I had a good buffer for the win I just focused on finishing the race. It was a good experience overall but I am definitely still in 5k mode. Hopefully by the next one I'll have a better build up of training. For now, I'll try and stick to some shorter races.
