Inaugural Saltair Half Marathon

Great race to start off the winter season and get all exctied for cold, snowy weather!  We seemed to get it all during this race, from nice and calm to windy/snowy/rainy/freezing.

I ran a couple miles with Andrea and Allie for our warmup.  It was very pleasant and calm at this point, so no one was too concerned about the weather.  Then, just as we all gather around the starting line, the wind picks up and it began to snow/rain.

The first couple miles of the race were controlled and easy with a small pack of girls, Christina (who won the Big Cottonwood Half) Allie (who won the TOU Marathon), me, and a girl from Colorado.  As fun as it was to run with them and chat, I got a little antsy and picked it up a bit after mile 3.  This strung us out some, with me leading and breaking the wind and Christina right on my heels.  I am just nice like that.

At mile 5, I decide to break away and create a gap if possible.  We make a 180 turn at mile 6.55 and so I got an idea of where everyone was. Christina was 10-15 sec back, and then Allie and the Colorado girl were back a bit from her.  I kept pressing the pace @ sub 6:10 for the next few miles.  Miles 7-9 were tough mentally and then it was like the wind finally died down a bit and I didn't feeli like I was fighting anymore.  So the last 4 miles felt good, with the last one as my fastest.

This race went pretty perfect for me.  We went out conservative, which helped me get into a rhythm right off and ease into a faster pace.  I was first in 1:21:24.  Then came Christina and Allie.  As soon as I finished, I realized how frozen my hands were.

The first thing I did was change into warmer clothes, then went for a cool down with Andrea and Collin.

Everyone ran well despite the crazy weather.  Jake won for the guys Half, and Andrea and Collin for the 5k.  We all set the course records! :)  They did a great job putting on the race and keeping things on time and organized.
