Salt Lake Winter Series 10K - 2/9/2013

Salt Lake Winter Series 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:34:24, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 2

Just glad to get this one in.  It was a bit cold and windy.  I didn't know what to expect with two really down running weeks leading up to this--but my legs weren't tired :-)

The race got off to a slow start for the leaders.  I felt good at the first mile split 5:13 and was cautiously optimistic for the rest of the race.  As we neared the turnaround, I could see Riley and Jake grimacing as they ran into the snow and wind.  The second half of the race was not quite as pleasant as the first.  For the first 1/2 mile or so headed back, Walter, Fritz, and high schooler from East, and I took turns leading into the wind.  When Walter and high schooler fell of the pace Fritz and I exchanged the lead a couple more times.  I had high hopes to be able to do this for most of the rest of the race, but I hit the wall pretty hard at mile 4.  I remember seeing 5:45 as a split--I don't remember which mile, and I had the thought "Am I really running a 10K?"

I think mile 5 was just under 6 minutes.  It felt like I was barely moving at this point.  I mustered up a little strength to push the last .2.  It's a good thing because Walter, Kevin, and the high schooler were making ground.

I'm glad I got this one in as though as it was.  It was really cool to see a lot of top-notch runners.  Congrats to Riley who tied the course record in such tough conditions.  He's a freaking animal right now.
