I decided earlier this week that I wanted to go for a PR in the half. I wasn't sure if I was ready since my long runs have been less than quality with my recent vacation and all the races I've done. Once I decided to go for it I settled on a goal of sub 1:20 and knew I had to ave a 6:05 pace to accomplish this. I figured a 5:5X pace in the canyon and 6:0X on University would be a good plan. It turns out I was able to hold on to the 5:5x with a couple faster than that for a lot longer than I thought I could, but I attribute that to the awesome group I ran with - Kassi, Scott and Mike. Kassi was up for working together - I love running with her. She is so smart, calm and consistent. I was really lucky to have her to pull me along.
Scott and Mike helped break the wind for us. I felt great for most of the race but couldn't respond when Kassi made a big push after we got out of the canyon. I slowed a bit on the University Avenue section but didn't completely die or fall apart. Scott was so nice and came back to help me when he saw me fall back. He stayed with me until about 3/4 mile to the finish when he told me, "You got this!" I saw the clock ticking up from high 1:17 and I tried to push hard to the finish and barely broke 1:18 (at least per my Garmin) with a 1:17:59. This was definitely one of the more enjoyable 1/2s I've done, but that is 100% due to the great company I was in.
I took 3rd overall next to phenom Kody Kleven and our one and only Kassi Harmon. Congrats, ladies!
