Spanish Fork Half Marathon

Goal today was to win and break the record (1:20:18 by Michelle Lowry 2010). It was a cool morning and really nice weather. I ran a couple miles to warm up w/ Josse, Brandon, and Tony. No strides, and feeling pretty good. At the start, a lot of people were talking and distracted and suddening the gun went off and no one was ready. But off we went.

I ran by feel, not going too hard, but making sure I was within range of my goal. It was a pretty honest course, flat w/ a few hills. Within 2.5 miles of the race I was by myself, but I could see Brandon ahead, which helped me know when to turn. At 5.5 miles I took a Hammer Gel, but missed the water (normal for me), so had to wait until mile 8. It actually still helped a lot, I must have a pretty tough stomach.

I was right around pace of the record the whole time, but it really came down to the last couple miles for me to be sure to break the record. So I started picking it up the last 1.5 mile and finished hard, last mile in 5:46. I was second overall to Brandon Dase, who ran really well on super tired legs. Josse barely missed second place, also running on super tired legs and racing last weekend! Crazy Marathon training!

Cool down w/ Josse for 4 miles on the 5k course. It was really a perfect weather day. And fun to see Josse and Brandon.
