Wanted to get a fun little race in. Signed up for this race this
week just wanting to get something quick it and get a feel for where my
fitness is at. Didn't expect many people for this as a lot of
competitive runners would like the prize money in the half much better.
I recognized a few people at the starting line including Matt Poulson
who I got dropped by at the WRS 10k in Jan. Not knowing where his
fitness was, I decided not just to hammer it from the gun and feel out
the waters for the first 1.5 - 2 miles. We went through the mile in
5:25 which felt smooth and easy, Matt made a push and we went through
the 2nd mile in 5:08. I remember Matt outkicking some guy at the WRS
10k for 3rd and decided to make a move and not leave it down to the last
400. 6 months ago, I'd be just fine closing in sub 60, but I'm not in
that shape right now, went through the 3rd mile in 4:57 and the last .18
(according to my garmin course was a little long, might have been due
to weaving in and out of half marathoners....) at 4:21 pace. I haven't
done any running that has been faster than 5 min pace in a while and I
can def see that's a weakness of mine right now. Matt was 2nd close
behind and looks like he is on the mend after the hamstring injury
earlier this year.
It was great meeting some new faces and
matching faces with people on the blog like Matt, Brandon, Justin and
Spencer. It was great to see Scott and the crew close to the
finishline. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Though this
wasn't an all out effort like I originally planned, I think I have a
good grasp where my fitness is at and some things I need to focus on. I
need more threshold work and get back to my marathon paced long runs
(consistency is the key). I need to put in some strides and maybe a
workout every other week that's more of a 5k-10k workout like I'd do in
the XC and Track seasons. 3rd, I need to get my volume back up to 80
mpw minimum.
Looking forward to a couple weeks just training and
trying to get back to the shape I was at the end of Feb, then progress
from there.
