2014 Spectrum 10k
I knew this one was going to be interesting. Since the 2013 STG marathon I had only run a handful of times. My monthly mileage was about 5% of usual. I traditionally do the Snow Canyon ½ marathon in November, but our vehicle had a problem on the drive down and I missed the race.
I spent at least 1 week each month from October through January working in Tokyo. My son completed his mission at the end of December. We started a major renovation/remodel of our pioneer home in December. Let me just say that running was pushed way down the list of priorities. In fact most all of my desire to even run had disappeared.
I was basically going into this race with no real running preparation. I was going into it accepting that I was doing it just to notch a race for the STG runner’s series. I drove down to STG Friday afternoon. I fortunately have family in the area where I can stay.
Saturday morning I got up and drove over to the Ivan’s park. I got on the first bus and pulled my hat down over my eyes to rest during the wait and ride to the start. At the start line I found Karl. It was great to see him again. I was starting to get a bit hopped up and feeling the competitive spirit.
I decided to line up at the front and see what happened. The gun goes off and I am feeling good. So I decide to hang with at least the top 5. Mike Nelson took off and was gone by the first ¼ mile. I have run the course and race many times so I was feeling comfortable with the pace.
The first bit of the course has a lot of drop to it. It is easy to go out way to fast. I love running downhill. It makes me feel like a 10 year old again. I just kept the pace where it was comfortable yet pushing a bit. I tried to keep Amber and Karl in my sight. I know I couldn't catch them, but at least I could use them to pace.
Around mile 5 Devin was gaining on me. I yelled back to him to get moving. I needed someone to pull me in the last bit. He came by and this gave me a bit of a drive to push a little harder to the finish.
I ended up running the course in 36:08. This placed me first in Masters and 8th overall.  R.C. team members took 5 of the top 10 spots.
I was pleasantly surprised and happy with the result. I had not been running much at all. I am glad that my fitness had not dropped off much.

This race put the fire back into me. I am ready to move on and train for real. I hope to see you all soon at one of the many great races coming up.
