This was a fun race. I live close to the library in Orem, and my family has been doing this race for years. This was my very first 5k, although then I think I ran either a 28 or 38 (might have been the latter). This year the firefighter's 5k was just a backup from not being able to do UVM. I had been wanting to do UVM but injured my left arch in the Timp Trail Half marathon, and wasn't sure I'd be ready in time. It was pretty nice just to have an easy weekend where I could get a little cash winnings. I wasn't terribly well prepared for the race. I played basketball on Friday, the day before, and sprained my right ankle pretty badly. I was limping a little on Saturday and it was painful just to stand and walk as we were waiting for the race to start. That and having worked 14 & 1/2 hours at the Utah Valley Marathon Runner's Corner vendor booth at packet pickup on friday wasn't making me feel too optomistic about a solid race on Saturday. I could tell in the race that I didn't have as much strength from either leg, but it felt better than I'd hoped for and I was still able to hang with Derick for most of the race and take second. Saturday made me feel better about where I am with injuries though and I'm ready to train full-time again. :)
