This was my first Des News 10k and it definitely lived up to what I had heard about it. I wanted to test myself during this race so I stayed with Miles Batty and Patrick Smyth for the first 2-2.5 miles. I didn't have a watch or anything so I don't know how fast it was but it must have been the quickest 2 miles I've ever run. I was feeling good until about mile 3 when I started to feel the early fast pace. Once Batty started stretching his lead I started falling back. Just before the last turn heading into the long finishing stretch I got caught by John Coyle. He passed me strongly and I quickly realized 3rd place was not going to be mine today. On the final stretch Jake Krong, Brad Osguthorpe and I kept making surges until the finish line. I was able to dig deep to win that battle to finish 4th overall and finish atop the USATF circuit crew, so that was some consolation prize. I was impressed with John Coyle's finish, which got him some revenge from last year at cross country regionals and I hope he continues to run well on the roads. I was excited to be finished with this race so I could start a little break from racing and focus on building up my fitness for later on this year. Congrats to everyone who ran well this last week!
