Deseret News Half Marathon

I debated a long time about doing the 10k or half marathon today.... Last year I ran a pretty good race in the 10k and thought I could probably match that. But I'm not feeling super competitive lately, so I felt the half may be a better fit for me.

The race took off and Emily Jameson took it out at a cruising pace. I stayed on her tail for the first several miles, and it seemed like she was throwing in surges throughout. So I decided to back off the pace a bit and tried to get back in control. Emily is a super tough downhill runner!

At mile 10 I estimated being 45 seconds back from her, so I decided it was time to give it a go. But clearly I waited too long, the last half of the race was just brutal. Everything hurt. I had a terrible time getting going, but I really tried to push hard the last 5k. I made up about 15 seconds, because I finished 29 sec behind in 1:16:53, but really I had nothing left. Melody helped run me in the last half mile. My kick was lame and I'm sure I scared her with my weazing. Thank you Mel! You're awesome!

Christina Perry (T) finished soon after me in third.  She didn't go out with us in the beginning, so maybe she had a better experience the last half of the race. If I would have run the 10k and matched what I did last year, I would have finished 2nd. So I guess I was meant for second today. I didn't love the half, but maybe it just wasn't my day. All I could think of after passing the 10k mark is "I could be done!" It was a long time to suffer.

I still loved being a part of it all. Deseret News brings out a lot of Utah's talent. Lots of great performances in each race.
