2013 Deseret News Classic Half Marathon -- Trevor Baker

Overall Time: 1:11:28
Place overall: 4
Place in age division: 2

Wasn't sure how this was going to go down since my volume has been lower since the UV Half, my workouts have been pretty non-existent, I haven't been eating well and of course, I'm not getting used to sleeping 5-6 hours a night instead of 7-8.  I had signed up for this race back in May figuring I'd be able to really make an assault on the 1:10 barrier.  My approach to this race was what Matt suggested, really run it hard and build fitness by doing so.  Def was different strapping on a HR monitor at the start of a race and only wearing Kinvara's (no need to put on the fast shoes for this one and nice to track the stats with the HR monitor in a low key race/workout.  I would have loved to compete more up front, but there will be other races for that.  I knew that Bret, Riley and likely Fritz would be out of my grasp today, so I was looking to hold down 4th or 5th place and run between 1:10 and 1:12 since the course is pretty fast.

From the gun, the three I mentioned earlier took off, and as hard as it was, I let them go.  I sat in about 5/6th place for the first 3 miles, and moved into 4th at 3 miles.  My goal was really just keep it at a comfortable tempo down the canyon, no hammering, no slogging, just a good crisp pace.  I tried getting a cup of water at mile 6, I hope one of the photo guys got that cuz it was kind of funny.  I am horrible at drinking out of a cup on the go, so sure enough I try and drink it and it just goes all over my face and I'm just coughing for the next mile...  (Gotta figure that one out) When I hit the flatter Foothill stretch, I backed off just to conserve energy as I started to feel like I was finishing up a tempo workout.  Once I hit the more down hill section before 13th, I tried ramping up the pace again and seeing if I could get back on track for a 1:10 pace, came through mile 9 @ 5:24.  Hit a small hill prior to turning down temple and it just took it out of me.  From there on out it was just the "hold on for dear life march." The last 5k was tough and rough (over 18 mins).  Fun running through the parade route but man it was tough.  Once I turned towards the finish, it seemed like the last 1/2 mile was forever long.  Thankfully Scott and Spencer were there cheering, helped me pick it up and finish out the race.  My last mile was def the slowest and the most labored.  I'm sure part of it was I knew I had 4th in the bag so I just wanted to finish it out.  Definitely happy with the performance given all the circumstances, but as always, not satisfied :-)
