2014 Now I Can Walk 5k - *Course Record*
Overall Time: 15:56.1 - Course Record (They modified the course this year)
Overall Place: 1st
Overall Place in Age Division: 1st
What a great small race. This is put on by the "Now I Can" Foundation and is a charity run to support children undergoing intense physical therapy that are usually learning how to walk or improve function otherwise compromised by a disability of some kind. Found out about the race by an old friend Mike Vick who won it 3 years in a row a couple years back. I had to make a quick trip down to utah to sign a document at the bank and was hoping to jump in a race that might cover the cost of the gas down and back.
Got to race a good friend and former team mate of mine, Derick Moody again. He's always a strong runner and tough to compete with. Derick took the lead from the gun and i just stayed in tow for the first mile in 4:56 which didn't feel as smooth. We slowed through the last 2 miles, and though the first mile felt labored, my energy came back a bit. Derick and I ran side by side till about 2.6 miles where I made a move and finished strong. 15:56 was the final time and the course was right on. Technically it's a course record since they changed the course this year. It was fun running this race on all the roads that I used to train on while running at UVU.
Still have a lot of work to do before fall and having experiences like today are good to help keep myself progressing in the right direction. I'm not close to being in sub 15 shape in the next month on an honest course, but I might be able to get close to my altitude PR of 15:23. So I'll see how close I can get to that and keep moving forward through the summer and fall.
