Elevate 5k - Adam Jenkins

Adam Jenkins:
First overall!
Time: 16:25

This was a charity 5k for a dear friend of mine, Rachel Stratton. In the Fall of 2012 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and at the time was given much less than a year to live. However, throughout it all Rachel has kept an amazingly positive attitude and has more or less stayed ahead of her cancer the whole time. She's been a great inspiration to me and a great friend, and I wanted to support her in whatever way I could today.

This was my first win in a 5k, and a good time to do so. I came in about 2 minutes ahead of second place, a kid from Timpanogos high school's track team. We ran together for the first mile, then I split off and started putting some distance between us. It felt pretty tough actually. I'm not at all used to running alone, and admittedly didn't enjoy it too much. My watch measured the race at 3.01. I definitely did not feel fully recovered from the Provo City half last week, especially considering I ran about the same pace during that race. I also wore a cape, which was interesting and something that I don't necessarily recommend. Overall it was a fun event though and hopefully helpful to the families it was put on for. Before the race I had decided that if I won anything I'd donate it to my dear friend Rachel. The $300 in winnings would have been nice considering the $500 car repairs I'll have to take out of my next paycheck, but it was really cool to see the top three finishers all donate back their winnings to those they were running for. Live Strong!
