Freedom Run - Melody

This race is a fun 4th of July tradition.  The course is tough with the uphill grind at the end, but it is accurate and the competition is always good.

My baby is 8 weeks old now and  I am slowly getting back into shape.  I thought this would be a good opportunity to measure my fitness against the last 5k I raced 3 weeks ago.

I warmed up 1.5 to the start and saw a couple fellow Sojourners at the start.  I lined up with them and off we went.  The first mile felt great.  The parade goers were enthusiastic and I was holding a sub 6 pace (barely).  Wow- it's been a while since that's happened.  I passed several people along university avenue and one woman passed me.  That was the last woman I let go by me.

I tried to push through the hurt of the 2nd mile, but I knew I had 9th East to reckon with so I held back just a little.  The uphill climb up 9th was a challenge, and my pace definite suffered, but I stayed mentally strong and didn't get passed.  I pushed to the finish when I saw the clock tick from 18 to 19 minutes.  I really wanted to get in the 19:40s... I ended up getting exactly 19:40- a definite improvement from my last race.  I gave no idea how I placed because I think they messed up the results.  My best guess is top 5.  I've got some work to do, but I'm excited to get back into the groove!
