Wasatch Wellness Run 5k

This 5k surprised me with how many high school cross country runners I saw. The Wasatch cross country team showed up and then several other young runners that I didn't recognize. Had they been coached under Kuhlmann's tutelage (go Timpview) they would have known the only rule I ever learned in cross country, know the course. It wasn't even 200 meters into the race that we were all supposed to turn from the parking lot road at Timpanogos Park and go onto the River Trail. A group of about 10 runners were ahead of me and they just kept going straight to the highway like a bunch of lemmings. I shouted at them that they were supposed to turn up the River Trail. This really helped me because I got a few seconds rest as I waited for them to turn around and get back on course.

Just like I normally do, I went out conservatively for the first mile. After that I started catching up to the lead kid (looked like he was a senior in high school, but I don't know for sure). I figured I would pass him once we turned around and started going downhill. I was surprised to see that he also picked it up a considerable notch so I just tried to spend the next half mile closing the distance. It was hard to make a move at this point because were were running against the 5k crowd and some bikers. At one mile to go I saw a good break in the trail and blew by him. I wasn't running with a watch so I'll just assume it was world record pace. I came in strong for the win and I assume that I had about 15 to 20 seconds before the second place runner. I didn't end up talking to him and his name never showed up on the results, so I have no idea who he was.

Taylor took us on an ambitious 6 mile cool down with the guy from Mexico who beat him. It'll be interesting to see how this new runner fares at some of the upcoming races.

Overall Place 5k: 1st
Time: 16:29
